what does this say about the human experience-
our actions are formed by our thoughts - if we think we're dumb, we're going to act more in accordance with that, whether or not it is true
we have this desire to attach a meaningless title to something in order to catergorize is- this meaningless title ends up taking on meaning

medieval labels - to show where the food came from
first introduction of modern food labels: 1850s as safety measures due to food related illnesses
labeling in the progressive era - focus of preventing producers from filtering or misbranding
1906 - Pure Food and Drug Act -> **prohibited false or misleading information about the food**
false or misleading information- perhaps the cited self esteem issues come not from the actual "disability" but from the unseen impact that having a brain that works different from how the school system was made
1936- Food Drug and Cosmetic Act -> **a food shall be deemed to be misbranded if its
labeling is false or misleading in any particular**
the wording of both the acts can relate to people!
Research on the other labels

1877 - "word blindness" - recognized by Adolph Kussmal, credited with coming up with the term to describe individuals who struggled with reading despite being of average or above average intelligence
1963 - "learning disabilities" first introduced to a group of parents and educators
**Dyslexia**
challenges of dyslexia - low self esteem, anxiety, depression, behavioral issues, self perception- comparison in an academic environment
Comapring yourself to others in a rigid academic enviroment is like getting upset because you don't fit into a certain shoe size - nothing is wrong with the person, it's the system
**ADHD**
from 1997 - 2016 -increase in prevalence from 6.2% to 10.2%
90% of children carry symptoms into adulthood
initial diagnosis- categorized with a focus of overactivity and distractibility
Changes in diagnostic determination for ADHD between the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) IV and V editions
Pervasiveness-
for 4th edition: evidence of *impairment* in 2 or more setting
for 5th edition: evidence of *symptoms* in 2 or more settings
The change from impairement to symptoms may contribute to the rise of diagnosis. It also only lists 2 settings. there are so many different arenas in life, how can something be diagnosed just looking at 2 of them? Especially when one of them is almost always school, which is obvoiusly not made to support students
Structure
there's a couple different ways:
context, significance, experiences of each aspect individually then tie them together at the end
OR
context for both at the beginning then tying them together all along
the plan:
context and give reason and review for food labels
but circle back to other labels
