1. 1. The role(s) of interest groups in the nation 2. The major interest groups in the nation 3. The goals of each interest group in the nation 4. How much influence each interest group has in the nation – how successful has it been in achieving its goals 2. Compare one authoritarian nation with one democratic nation by comparing and contrasting the role and effectiveness of interest groups in the nations. Iran: 🇮🇷 1. To allow people to find groups to join to support important causes 2. IRGC, Bonyads 3. IRGC- defend the islamic republic - Bonyads- promote islamic values, support charitable and welfare programs 4. Bonyads have influence due to being of the wealthy aspect, and the IRGC has a military influence UK: 🇬🇧 1. Amnesty International, Unite the Union, Greenpeace UK 2. protects rights for all people, aims for protecting the rights of workers, wants to take climate action and creat more sustainability 3. Unite the Union is one of the largest trade unions, gives a places for laborers to be represented, influencing policy involving labor and employment, Greenpeace UK - campaigns for climate action and sustainability 4. all have been somewhat influential, the set up of the UK allows for interest groups to have an impact Both nations allow for intereest groups and there are joined by people and can have a impact. In UK, it has a greater impact because the government is more willing to allow for something that the people support, as opposed to in Iran, where the interest groups that have success are the ones that seek to uphold the Islamic state, and if not they are put down. In a pluralist system, the state allows interest groups to exist, despite the possibility of them opposing the government. They also can be influenced by the interest groups and policy and legislative change can occur. In a corporatist system, the state only allows interest groups to have an impact if they will align with the state. So interest groups in this system are more incentivized to side with the state in order to create actual change. Mexico used to be largely corporatist, due partially to the domination of PRI party.
