## 1.1 Ideas of Democracy
democratic ideas in America were influenced by the enlightenment
**natural rights** - people born with certain right that can't be taken away
state of nature - freeness of people
**popular sovereignty/social contract** - power to govern is in power of people, to protect rights, people willingly give over the ability to govern - people have the right to overthrow government if it doesn't serve them
**republicanism** - separation of powers in three branches
all these three ideas are seen in the constitution

3models to know:
participatory: emphasizes broad participation in politics- direct voting for laws.
elite: emphasizes limited participation by a few well-educated and informed states people
pluralist: describes group bases activism by non-governmental interests which work to impact political decision making
