Executive Systems Evaluation
Read the Executive Systems fact sheet and choose three of the Big 6 countries. For each country, describe its executive system and then list at least two advantages and two disadvantages of the system.
Iran 🇮🇷
Iran has an interesting executive system. It has both a president and a Supreme Leader. The Supreme Leader is not elected by the people, and is the head of state of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Supreme Leader is also the commander in chief. The president is the head of the government, is elected by the people, and serves a 4 year term. The president reports to the Supreme Leader. One advantage is that they have a people elected president, but the president also answers to another leader. Another advantage is having a strong religious leader, if that is something important to the people. One disadvantage goes with the last advantage; the government is deeply entangled with religion, and if a citizen is of a different religion, there can come some legal conflict just because they are of a different religion. Another disadvantage is that the Supreme Leader is not elected by the people, they have no choice in who is the big boss of their country.
China 🇨🇳
China is run by the Chinese Communist party, which chooses top officials without input from the people, including the president. The president's role is as the commander in chief and secretary of the Chinese Communist Party. The president nominates a person to be the premier, who is head of the government. One advantage to this system is having the power divided among the party, the president, and the premier. Another advantage is the people "don't have to worry" about the politics, as the people have no input. One disadvantage is the people have no input! Another disadvantage is the concentration of power in the Chines Communist party. All of the power is concentrated there.
Mexico 🇲🇽
In Mexico, it is similar to the United States. the people elect a president, who is chief executive, commander in chief, and head of the state. One advantage of this system is that the people are able to express their voice through voting for their leader. Another advantage is the need for senate confirmation for some cabinet appointments. One disadvantage is that the power is more concentrated in one person being in charge of the military and state. Another disadvantage is the people don't have a say in who goes into the cabinet, as the president gets to pick that.
